Young Jane Wilde was once a noblewoman, but the coming of a dark plague and winds of ill fortune have led her to the streets of London where she survives on her wits alone, stealing enough food to eat, and fencing enough pretty jewelry to keep a roof over her head.
Unfortunately for the once Lady Wilde, the British empire is still in an expansive state and intends to settle the far off Australian continent not only as a penal colony, but as a lawful outpost of the empire. To that end they need women to sate the lusts of the criminal men already languishing in that desolate place. When Jane is caught stealing bread and put before a judge, her sentence is inevitable deportation.
Once aboard the transportation ship Jane catches the eye of Master Roake, the man charged with overseeing discipline. Jane thinks him cruel and harsh, but her fear does not quell her natural defiance. Indeed, her rebellious nature sets her across his path many times - and equally many times across his knee.
Jane's proud nature cannot bring her to submit to the man who wields leather as naturally as he breathes. As for Master Roake, he is not a man given easily to sentiment, nor his he accustomed to finding true ladies on his ship and under his lash. And yet, each time they meet in a clash of wills and reddened flesh, a fondness grows.
Soon they will make land. Jane will be forced to serve her sentence in one of the female factories and Master Roake will once more set sail for England. Love is no match for the mighty British Empire.
Or is it?

I do not take a 5 star rating lightly. First a book has to be well written. This one is very well written! I believed the 'voice' was indeed that of Jane Wilde. Second, the story has to be one I find difficult to put down. This one was impossible to put down. It is riveting, compelling, fast paced, and romantically captivating. Third, the story or the characters have to leave me wanting to read more about them, or more of the work by the author. This book was a vivid 'experience' of what it might have been like to be one of the women on one of those transport ships to colonize Australia. The author very skillfully created vivid and moving images of the life aboard ship for many months, the lot of women in general in that time, the hardships and cruelty, and trepidation they endured, and courage that it took to forge a new life in that vast, wild, raw new land. The story was indeed riveting, compelling, often deeply moving, and with more than a few scenes that were very funny. I enjoyed it immensely. This one gets a two handed High Five!Product details

Taming the Wilde edition by Loki Renard Blushing Books Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I agree with a previous reviewer that the description of life on board and the hardships faced by women at the time is superb, more than superb actually. I enjoyed that a lot.
But what I most enjoyed was how noble the heroine is and I don't mean station wise, I mean character wise. She is strong and she is sensitive, she is smart and full of spunk but she is also quite innocent... Here we have a heroine who knew better times but did she break when adversity hit her? No. Quite the contrary. She had known better times, she had been shown kindness and I believe she used that in her favor when things got crappy.
It took me a little more time to warm up (but of course, I did) to Master Roake but that in itself is a testimony of how much we hear Jane through the tale and how we feel what she feels through an amazingly written first person story. One feels what the heroine feels, this is an amazingly written first person novel. I loved it.
I enjoyed this complicated story that blends Old England with historical discipline & ideals imposed on women. More than that, though, it is an amazing love story that works . I enjoyed it.
Loki Renard is a gifted writer with a real command of the language of the period in which she writes. This book was funny, and tension filled. The sign of a good story is when it evokes audible reactions from the reader, and I experienced many of them. I was connected and sympathetic to the main character from the beginning, and I journeyed through her ordeal with humor and anxiety.
I'm afraid this wonderful book loses one star for allowing the main character to go just a little too far in her antics. Her mouth got her into trouble over and over again, and she didn't seem to learn from her mistakes. I recall wondering to myself if perhaps she wasn't bright enough to rationalize a better course of action.
But all in all, this was an excellent story. The sexual passages weren't too long or overwhelming, and the relationship of Wilde and Roake was believable and well written. I'll be checking out more books by this writer.
I really enjoyed this book and as always I loved the heroine created by Ms. Renard. Her female characters always make me laugh out loud and is a large reason as to why I always purchase her books and know I will be entertained! There is quite a bit of history in this story and it really opened my eyes to how things may have been during this time period. Absolutely loved the ending! I don't know why my name keeps appearing as customer, sheesh, I have changed it to back to SH!
