Alien Among Anxious Artists is a humorous, non-fiction narrative describing adventures of American ceramic artist Dennis Parks in Central Europe, and changes occurring there as reflected in the lives of his counterparts during their uncertain passage from drab Communist repression into benign Capitalist neglect.
The book concentrates on artistic activity in the core of Mitteleuropa — Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Poland — from 1982 to 1994, while Socialism was deliquescing.

Excellent writing concerning these changes has been published by academics and journalists, such as Timothy Garton Ash and David Remnick, authors who breakfasted with ex-President Lech Wa³eºa in Warsaw before flying off for dinner in Moscow with former K.G.B.
Chief Gennady Zyuganov. Dennis’ sources readily acknowledged that they had less leverage on the future. They were curious about the life he lived as an artist in America. Mitteleuropean artists professed that they could easily identify with a contemporary artist who lived lightly on the periphery of society (though they struggled to comprehend why a Capitalist would freely choose this alternative).

In the 1980s and 1990s, internationally renowned potter Dennis Parks was invited to visit several Eastern European as a guest artist/Artist in Residence. This book offers a terrifically entertaining glimpse of his experiences, but has the further purpose of describing the state-funded programs he particiated in. It's a great read.

When I finished Alien Among Anxious Artists, I immediately sent my copy to Norton Dodge, whom I knew slightly. Dodge had amassed an enormous collection of Soviet dissedent art during the 50s and 60s, and I was sure Parks' book would interest him greatly. He received it just a few months before he died.

While Alien Among Anxious Artists will appeal to a very broad audience, I especially recommend it to readers of John McPhee's book about Dodge. Together, they give an inside view of a fascinating era.

Alien Among Anxious Artists Dennis Parks 9781456847807 Books Reviews

As a fan of travel any time I can get out of town with a good book I'll go.
This is a great trip to 'Mittleurope' (Poland, The Czech Republic and Hungary)
carefully observed and interesting. I recently read Ian Frazier's 'Travels In
Siberia' and can tell you Dennis Parks is as good a writer if not better.
I moved right in with Parks and his new friends. With art, ceramics, food and fun thrown in it was very enjoyable. What a great journey, can't wait to go back again.
"Breaking rules seems to be ingrained in contemporary artists," aptly observes ceramic artist/poet Dennis Parks in this vividly written, wonderfully eccentric memoir of his adventures in Eastern Europe in the pivotal 1980s and early 1990s, as the Iron Curtain shuddered, cracked and then crumbled to the ground. Venturing forth from his home in a tiny, remote hillside town in Nevada, where he and his family conduct an internationally known pottery school, Parks made a series of adventurous trips to Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic to meet and work with fellow artists. Armed with a fearless curiosity and a few words in the local language, this restless middle-aged artist "on a quest for asymmetry" dined on pigs elbow and turkey roasted in a pottery kiln, got lost in the Prague subway, unwittingly committed various crimes against the state, and, after "the Change" had ended Communist rule, partied at a raucous, beer-fueled Eastern European version of Woodstock. He found that his old friends now were free to make whatever art they wished, although in some cases they no longer could afford the rent on their studios. A thoroughly engaging memoir by the author of the equally enjoyable "Living in the Country Growing Weird." -- Harper Barnes
